Top 5 Players of the 1969 World Series

On Thursday, October 16th, 1969, the New York Mets defeated the Baltimore Orioles at Shea Stadium in New York to win the 66th World Series four games to one. It was the first World Series championship for the Mets franchise and the 23rd that was won in New York. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.

5. #35 Mike Cuellar (Orioles)- P

Cuellar picked up player of the game honors in game one, going all nine innings while allowing only one earned run on six hits and four hits as the Orioles took the first game 4-1.

4. #39 Gary Gentry (Mets)- P

Gentry took player of the game honors in game three, knocking in two RBIs with one hit as he also pitched six and two-thirds innings with no earned runs on three hits and five walks in the Mets’ 5-0 victory.

3. #22 Donn Clendenon (Mets)- 1B

Clendenon earned player of the game honors in game five, taking a pair of RBIs with a run, a hit and a walk as the Mets won it 5-3 to claim the series championship.

2. #36 Jerry Koosman (Mets)- P

Koosman grabbed game two’s player of the game with just one earned run given up on a pair of hits and three walks over eight and two-thirds innings, with the Mets going on to win 3-1.

1. #41 Tom Seaver (Mets)- P

Seaver claimed player of the game honors in game four, as he went all 10 innings while allowing just one earned run on six hits and a pair of walks, with the Mets taking a 2-1 victory in 10 innings.
