On Thursday, April 16th, 1953, the Montreal Canadiens
defeated the Boston Bruins at the Montreal Forum to win the 40th Stanley Cup
Finals four games to one. It was the seventh Stanley Cup championship for the Canadiens
franchise, and the ninth that was won in Quebec. These are the top five players
that I felt most stood out during the series.
5. #1 Jacques Plante (Canadiens)- G
Plante claimed the win in game one, giving up just two
goals as the Canadiens took the 4-2 win to start off the series.
4. #7 Ed Sandford (Bruins)- F
Sandford was game two’s player of the game, as he
scored a pair of goals as the Bruins picked up the 4-1 victory.
3. #9 Maurice Richard (Canadiens)- F
Richard scored player of the game honors in game four,
as he got a hat trick with three goals in the Canadiens’ 7-3 win.
2. #1 Gerry McNeil (Canadiens)- G
McNeil picked up player of the game in game five, allowing
no goals as the Canadiens won it 1-0 in overtime to claim the series
championship.
1. #18 Ken Mosdell (Canadiens)- F
Mosdell earned player of the game honors in games one
and three, as game one saw him get one goal and one assist in the Canadiens’
4-2 win, while following it up in game three with another goal and assist to
help the Canadiens to the 3-0 victory.
