Top 5 Players of the 1940 Stanley Cup Finals

On Saturday, April 13th, 1940, the New York Rangers defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto to win the 27th Stanley Cup Finals four games to two. It was the third Stanley Cup championship for the Rangers franchise, and the 10th that was won in Ontario. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.

5. #16 Alf Pike (Rangers)- F

Pike picked up partial player of the game in game six, earning the tying goal in the Rangers’ 3-2 overtime victory to win the series title.

4. #6 Neil Colville (Rangers)- F

Colville claimed partial player of the game honors as well in game six, getting a goal in the game for a total of two goals and three assists on the series.

3. #1 Turk Broda (Maple Leafs)- G

Broda took player of the game in game three, giving up just one goal to help the Maple Leafs to the 2-1 victory.

2. #12 Bryan Hextall (Rangers)- F

Hextall earned player of the game honors in game two, scoring a hat trick with three goals scored, plus an assist to help the Rangers to the 6-2 win, along with partial player of the game in game six as he added a goal as well.

1. #1 Dave Kerr (Rangers)- G

Kerr took player of the game honors in games one and five, as he earned the win in game one with just one goal allowed as the Rangers won it 2-1 in overtime, followed in game five with another game with just one goal allowed in the Rangers’ 2-1 double overtime win.
