On Monday, March 30th, 1925, the Victoria Cougars of
the Western Canada Hockey League defeated the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League at Patrick Arena in Oak Bay, British Columbia to win the 12th
Stanley Cup Finals three games to one. It was the first and only Stanley Cup
championship for the Cougars franchise, as well as the only Stanley Cup
championship since 1917 to not be won by an NHL team, and the fourth that was
won in British Columbia. These are the top five players that I felt most stood
out during the series.
5. #1 Hap Holmes (Cougars)- G
Holmes grabbed the win in games one, two, four, allowing
two goals in game one while giving up just one goal in both games two and four
to help the Cougars to their lone championship.
4. #9 Gord Fraser (Cougars)- D
Fraser earned partial player of the game honors in
game one, getting a pair of goals as the Cougars won it 5-2.
3. #7 Howie Morenz (Canadiens)- F
Morenz took player of the game honors in game three, grabbing
a hat trick with three goals as the Canadiens went on to win their only game of
the finals 4-2.
2. Frank Fredrickson (Cougars)- F
Fredrickson claimed game four’s player of the game
with two goals scored to help the Cougars to a 6-1 victory to grab the series
title.
1. #7 Jack Walker (Cougars)- F
Walker was game two’s player of the game, as well as
partial player of the game in game one, scoring two goals in the Cougars’ 5-2
win, followed up in game two with another two-goal performance as the Cougars
jumped ahead in the series with the 3-1 victory.
