On Tuesday, April 6th, 1926, the Montreal Maroons of
the National Hockey League defeated the Victoria Cougars of the Western Hockey
League at the Montreal Forum in Montreal to win the 13th Stanley Cup Finals
three games to one. It was the first of two Stanley Cup championships for the Maroons
franchise, and the second that was won in Quebec. These are the top five
players that I felt most stood out during the series.
5. #11 Harold Halderson (Cougars)- D
Halderson took partial player of the game honors in
game three, getting one goal as the Cougars won it 3-2 to keep the series
alive. Halderson also added three goals in the regular season.
4. #2 Clem Loughlin (Cougars)- D
Loughlin split player of the game in game three, as he
nabbed a goal in the Cougars’ 3-2 victory as well, leading the Cougars
defensemen in scoring in the regular season with 7 goals.
3. Frank Fredrickson (Cougars)- F
Fredrickson claimed partial player of the game in game
three too, as he added a goal as well. Fredrickson also led the Cougars in
regular season scoring with 16 goals.
2. #1 Clint Benedict (Maroons)- G
Benedict earned player of the game honors in game
four, taking a complete game shutout to help the Maroons to the 2-0 win to seal
the series championship.
1. #5 Nels Stewart (Maroons)- F
Stewart picked up player of the game honors in games
one and two, as game one saw him add a pair of goals in the Maroons’ 3-0
victory to kick off the series, while in game two he had one goal and an assist
as the Maroons won it 3-0 again.
