Top 5 Players of the 2001 World Series

On Sunday, November 4th, 2001, the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the New York Yankees at Bank One Ballpark (now Chase Field) in Phoenix to win the 97th World Series four games to three. It was the first (and as of this writing, most recent) World Series championship for the Diamondbacks franchise and the first that was won in Arizona. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.

5. #22 Roger Clemens (Yankees)- P

Clemens took player of the game honors in game three, going seven innings while giving up one earned run along with three hits and three walks as the Yankees claimed a 2-1 win.

4. #20 Luis Gonzalez (Diamondbacks)- LF

Gonzalez, who scored the series-winning hit in game seven, also scored player of the game honors in game one, driving in two RBIs on two runs and two hits as the Diamondbacks picked up a 9-1 victory.

3. #29 Danny Bautista (Diamondbacks)- CF

Bautista grabbed player of the game in game six, getting five RBIs on three hits as the Diamondbacks won it 15-2.

2. #38 Curt Schilling (Diamondbacks)- P

Schilling claimed player of the game in game seven, going seven and a third innings while allowing just two earned runs along with six hits and no walks as the Diamondbacks went on to take the 3-2 victory to earn the series championship.

1. #51 Randy Johnson (Diamondbacks)- P

Johnson earned player of the game honors in game two, pitching a complete game shutout with just three hits and one walk allowed in the Diamondbacks’ 4-0 victory.
