On Saturday, October 26th, 1996, the New York Yankees
defeated the Atlanta Braves at Yankee Stadium in New York to win the 92nd World
Series four games to two. It was the 23rd World Series championship for the Yankees
franchise and the 28th that was won in New York. These are the top five players
that I felt most stood out during the series.
5. #31 Greg Maddux (Braves)- P
Maddux scored player of the game honors in game two,
going eight innings with no earned runs allowed on six hits and no walks as the
Braves claimed a 4-0 victory.
4. #13 Jim Leyritz (Yankees)- C
Leyritz earned player of the game in game four,
hitting three RBIs with one run and one hit as the Yankees scored the 8-6 win
in 10 innings.
3. #51 Bernie Williams (Yankees)- CF
Williams got player of the game in game three, hitting
three RBIs to go along with two runs and two hits as the Yankees went on to
take a 5-2 victory.
2. #22 Jimmy Key (Yankees)- P
Key picked up player of the game honors in game six, pitching
five and a third innings with one earned run allowed on five hits and three
walks in the Yankees’ 3-2 win to clinch the series victory.
1. #46 Andy Pettitte (Yankees)- P
Pettitte was game five’s player of the game, allowing
no earned runs on five hits and three walks over the course of eight and a
third innings pitched to help the Yankees to the 1-0 win.
