Top 5 Players of the 1984 World Series

On Sunday, October 14th, 1984, the Detroit Tigers defeated the San Diego Padres at Tiger Stadium in Detroit to win the 81st World Series four games to one. It was the fourth (and as of this writing, most recent) World Series championship for the Tigers franchise and the sixth that was won in Michigan. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.

5. #7 Kurt Bevacqua (Padres)- DH

Bevacqua got player of the game honors in game two, as he drove in three RBIs with two runs and three hits in the Padres’ 5-3 victory; the only World Series game win in franchise history.

4. #8 Marty Castillo (Tigers)- 3B

Castillo picked up player of the game honors in game three, knocking in two RBIs along with one run and one hit, as the Tigers went on to win it 5-2.

3. #3 Alan Trammell (Tigers)- SS

Trammell earned game four’s player of the game, getting four RBIs along with two runs and three hits in the Tigers’ 4-2 victory.

2. #23 Kirk Gibson (Tigers)- RF

Gibson scored player of the game honors in game five, picking up five RBIs with three runs, three hits and a walk as the Tigers went on to win 8-4 to clinch the series championship.

1. #47 Jack Morris (Tigers)- P

Morris pitched his way to player of the game honors in game one, going all nine innings while giving up just two earned runs on eight hits and three walks as the Tigers took a 3-2 win.
