Top 5 Players of the 1977 World Series

On Tuesday, October 18th, 1977, the New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers at Yankee Stadium in New York to win the 74th World Series four games to two. It was the 21st World Series championship for the Yankees franchise and the 25th that was won in New York. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.

5. #8 Reggie Smith (Dodgers)- RF

Smith picked up player of the game in game two, earning two RBIs with two runs, two hits and a walk in the Dodgers’ 6-1 win.

4. #7 Steve Yeager (Dodgers)- C

Yeager earned player of the game honors in game five, taking four RBIs with one run and one hit in the Dodgers’ 10-4 victory.

3. #35 Don Gullett (Yankees)- P

Gullett claimed player of the game honors in game one, as he pitched eight and a third innings with three earned runs allowed on five hits and six walks as the Yankees went on to win it 4-3 in 12 innings.

2. #49 Ron Guidry (Yankees)- P

Guidry pitched his way to player of the game in game four, giving up two earned runs on four hits and three walks over the course of all nine innings as the Yankees won 4-2.

1. #44 Reggie Jackson (Yankees)- RF

Jackson grabbed player of the game in games three and seven, as game three saw him drive in an RBI with a pair of runs, a hit and a walk as the Yankees went on to win 5-3, followed with a game seven performance that saw him drive in five RBIs with four runs, three hits and a walk as the Yankees clinched the series victory with an 8-4 victory.
