Top 5 Players of the 1976 World Series

On Thursday, October 21st, 1976, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium in New York to win the 73rd World Series four games to none. It was the fourth World Series championship for the Reds franchise and the 24th that was won in New York. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.

5. #38 Gary Nolan (Reds)- P

Nolan picked up the win in game four, pitching six and two-thirds innings while giving up two earned runs on eight hits and a walk as the Reds went on to win it 7-2 to claim the series sweep.

4. #35 Don Gullett (Reds)- P

Gullett got the win in game one, going seven and a third innings while allowing one earned run on five hits and three walks in the Reds’ 5-1 victory.

3. #30 Ken Griffey (Reds)- RF

Griffey got player of the game honors in game two with an RBI along with a run, as the Reds won it 4-3 to start the series.

2. #15 George Foster (Reds)- LF

Foster earned player of the game in game three, driving in two RBIs with a run and a pair of hits in the Reds’ 6-2 victory.

1. #5 Johnny Bench (Reds)- C

Bench got player of the game in games one and four, hitting an RBI along with a run and two hits as the Reds went on to win 5-1, while in game four he drove in five RBIs along with two runs and two hits in the Reds’ 7-2 victory to clinch the series sweep.
