On Thursday, May 5th, 1966, the Montreal Canadiens
defeated the Detroit Red Wings at the Detroit Olympia to win the 53rd Stanley
Cup Finals four games to two. It was the 14th Stanley Cup championship for the
Maple Leafs franchise, and the 10th that was won in Michigan. These are the top
five players that I felt most stood out during the series.
5. #19 Paul Henderson (Red Wings)- F
Henderson picked up player of the game honors in game
one, getting one goal in the Red Wings’ 3-2 victory to start out the series.
4. #8 Dick Duff (Canadiens)- F
Duff earned player of the game in game five, getting
one goal and one assist as the Canadiens went on to win it 5-1.
3. #16 Henri Richard (Canadiens)- F
Richard got player of the game in game six, earning a
goal and an assist to help the Canadiens to the 3-2 overtime victory to seal
the series championship.
2. #21 Gilles Tremblay (Canadiens)- F
Tremblay earned player of the game honors in game
three, as he scored a pair of goals in the Canadiens’ 4-2 victory.
1. #30 Gump Worsley (Canadiens)- G
Worsley took player of the game honors in game four, making
22 saves on 23 shots as the Canadiens took the 2-1 win.
