On Thursday, October 15th, 1964, the St. Louis
Cardinals defeated the New York Yankees at Busch Stadium in St. Louis to win
the 61st World Series four games to three. It was the seventh World Series
championship for the Cardinals franchise and the sixth that was won in Missouri.
These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.
5. #25 Joe Pepitone (Yankees)- 1B
Pepitone was game six’s player of the game, as he had four
RBIs with a run and a hit as the Yankees went on to win it 8-3.
4. #56 Jim Bouton (Yankees)- P
Bouton earned player of the game honors in game three,
going all nine innings while allowing no earned runs on six hits and three
walks in the Yankees’ 2-1 victory.
3. #18 Mike Shannon (Cardinals)- RF
Shannon, who later became a radio broadcaster for the
Cardinals, picked up game one’s player of the game, as he hit two RBIs with
three runs and two hits in the Cardinals’ 9-5 win to kick off the series.
2. #15 Tim McCarver (Cardinals)- C
Another well-known broadcaster after retirement, McCarver
was the player of the game in game five, grabbing three RBIs on one run and
three hits as the Cardinals claimed a 5-2 victory in 10 innings.
1. #14 Ken Boyer (Cardinals)- 3B
Boyer got player of the game in game four and game
seven, as game four saw him earn all four of the team’s RBIs with one run and
one hit as the Cardinals won it 4-3, followed by a game seven performance that
saw him knock in an RBI along with three runs and three hits to help the
Cardinals claim a 7-5 victory to clinch the series.
