On Wednesday, October 10th, 1956, the New York Yankees
defeated the Brooklyn (now Los Angeles) Dodgers at Ebbets Field in New York to
win the 53rd World Series four games to three. It was the 17th World Series
championship for the Yankees franchise and the 21st that was won in New York.
These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.
5. #9 Hank Bauer (Yankees)- RF
Bauer got player of the game honors in game four, knocking
in two RBIs with a run and a hit as the Yankees went on to win 6-2.
4. #17 Enos Slaughter (Yankees)- LF
Slaughter picked up player of the game in game three, getting
three RBIs on one run and two hits as the Yankees got their first win of the
series 5-3.
3. #8 Yogi Berra (Yankees)- C
Berra had player of the game in game seven, hitting
four RBIs with three runs, two hits and two walks as the Yankees claimed the
series championship with a 9-0 victory.
2. #18 Don Larsen (Yankees)- P
Larsen earned player of the game in game five,
pitching the only perfect game in World Series history, as well as the first in
34 years up to that point and fourth total perfect game in MLB history, with
only 23 having been pitched as of 2019.
Larsen pitched all nine innings while allowing no
earned runs, no hits and no walks, as the Yankees claimed a 2-0 victory.
1. #14 Gil Hodges (Dodgers)- 1B
Hodges was game one and game two’s player of the game,
grabbing three RBIs in game one with a pair of hits in the Dodgers’ 6-3
victory, while game two saw him hit four RBIs with two runs, three hits and a
pair of walks as the Dodgers went on to take the 13-8 victory.
