On Wednesday, October 10th, 1945, the Detroit Tigers
defeated the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field in Chicago to win the 42nd World
Series four games to three. It was the second World Series championship for the
Tigers franchise and the fifth that was won in Illinois. These are the top five
players that I felt most stood out during the series.
5. #6 Stan Hack (Cubs)- 3B
Hack earned player of the game in game six, picking up
three RBIs with one run, four hits and a pair of walks in the Cubs’ 8-7 victory
in 12 innings.
4. #13 Claude Passeau (Cubs)- P
Passeau got player of the game in game three, pitching
a complete game shutout with just one hit and one walk allowed in the Cubs’ 3-0
victory.
3. #9 Paul Richards (Tigers)- C
Richards took player of the game honors in game seven,
grabbing four RBIs along with two hits in the Tigers’ 9-3 victory to claim the
series.
2. #35 Virgil Trucks (Tigers)- P
Trucks picked up player of the game honors in game two,
earning a complete game pitched on just one earned run on seven hits and three
walks as the Tigers went on to win 4-1.
1. #11 Dizzy Trout (Tigers)- P
Trout pitched his way to player of the game in game
four, pitching all nine innings while giving up no earned runs on five hits and
a walk as the Tigers went on to take the 4-1 win.
