Top 5 Players of the 1937 World Series

On Sunday, October 10th, 1937, the New York Yankees defeated the New York Giants at Polo Grounds in New York to win the 34th World Series four games to one. It was the sixth World Series championship for the Yankees franchise and the 10th that was won in New York. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.

5. #16 Monte Pearson (Yankees)- P

Pearson went eight and two-thirds innings in game three, giving up one earned run on five hits and a pair of walks as the Yankees went on to win 5-1.

4. #15 Red Ruffing (Yankees)- P

Ruffing pitched a complete game in game two with one earned run on seven hits and three walks to give the Yankees an 8-1 victory.

3. #3 Hank Leiber (Giants)- CF

Lieber got player of the game in game four, picking up two RBIs with two runs, two hits and a walk as the Giants took their only win of the series 7-3.

2. #11 Lefty Gomez (Yankees)- P

Gomez was game five’s player of the game as he went all nine innings with two earned runs allowed on 10 hits and a walk in the Yankees’ 4-2 victory to win the series.

1. #3 George Selkirk (Yankees)- RF

Selkirk was player of the game in games one, two and three, as he hit two RBIs with a run and a hit in the Yankees’ 8-1 win, followed by a three RBI performance with two runs and two hits as the Yankees won 8-1. In game three, Selkirk added an RBI with two runs and a hit in the Yankees’ 5-1 victory.
