On Tuesday, October 9th, 1934, the St. Louis Cardinals
defeated the Detroit Tigers at Navin Field in Detroit to win the 31st World
Series four games to three. It was the third World Series championship for the Cardinals
franchise and the fourth that was won in Michigan. These are the top five
players that I felt most stood out during the series.
5. #14 Schoolboy Rowe (Tigers)- P
Rowe was game two’s player of the game, as he pitched
all 12 innings giving up just two earned runs on seven hits and no walks in the
Tigers’ 3-2 win in 12 innings.
4. #10 Tommy Bridges (Tigers)- P
Bridges earned player of the game honors in game five
with a complete game pitched with one run allowed on seven hits with no walks
allowed as the Tigers won 3-1.
3. #7 Joe Medwick (Cardinals)- LF
Medwick got player of the game in game one, grabbing a
pair of RBIs along with two runs and four hits in the Cardinals’ 8-3 victory to
start out the series.
2. #3 Frankie Frisch (Cardinals)- 2B
Frisch, game seven’s player of the game, knocked in
three RBIs along with a run and a hit as the Cardinals won in an 11-0 blowout
to clinch the series victory.
1. #21 Paul Dean (Cardinals)- P
Dean was the player of the game in games three and six,
as game three saw him pitch all nine innings with an earned run on eight hits
and five walks as the Cardinals claimed the 4-1 win, then had another nine
inning effort with one earned run on seven hits and two walks in game six,
which the Cardinals won 4-3.
