On Wednesday, October 8th,
1930, the Philadelphia (now Oakland) Athletics defeated the St. Louis Cardinals
at Shibe Park in Philadelphia to win the 27th World Series four games to two.
It was the fifth World Series championship for the Athletics franchise and the
fifth that was won in Pennsylvania. These are the top five players that I felt
most stood out during the series.
5. Jesse Haines
(Cardinals)- P
Haines was the game four
player of the game, as he pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run with
four hits and four walks in the Cardinals’ 3-1 win.
4. Bill Hallahan
(Cardinals)- P
Hallahan earned player of
the game honors in game three, as he pitched a complete game shutout on seven
hits and five walks as the Cardinals took the 5-0 victory.
3. Lefty Grove
(Athletics)- P
Grove pitched his way to
player of the game in game one, as he went all nine innings allowing two earned
runs on nine hits and one walk as the Athletics won it 5-2.
2. George Earnshaw
(Athletics)- P
Earnshaw grabbed player
of the game honors in game five, going seven innings with no earned runs given
up along with two hits and three walks in the Athletics’ 2-0 win.
1. Jimmy Dykes
(Athletics)- 3B
Dykes claimed player of
the game honors in games two and six, getting two RBIs and a hit in game two in
the Athletics’ 6-1 win, as well as two RBIs and two runs, two hits and two
walks in game six as the Athletics claimed the 7-1 victory to win the series.
