Top 5 Players of the 1929 World Series

On Monday, October 14th, 1929, the Philadelphia (now Oakland) Athletics defeated the Chicago Cubs at Shibe Park in Philadelphia to win the 26th World Series four games to one. It was the fourth World Series championship for the Athletics franchise and the fourth that was won in Pennsylvania. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.

5. Guy Bush (Cubs)- P

Bush grabbed player of the game honors in game three, as the Cubs won their only game of the series 3-1 with Bush going all nine innings, allowing one earned run on nine hits and a pair of walks.

4. Jimmy Dykes (Athletics)- 3B

Dykes was game four’s player of the game, knocking in three RBIs with a run and three hits as the Athletics went on to win 10-8.

3. Al Simmons (Athletics)- LF

Simmons also had a strong offensive performance to take player of the game in game two, as he hit four RBIs with two runs, two hits and a walk in the Athletics’ 9-3 victory.

2. Rube Walberg (Athletics)- P

Walberg earned player of the game honors in game five, as he went the final five and a third innings with no earned runs allowed on two hits and no walks, as the Athletics won 3-2 to claim the series championship.

1. Howard Ehmke (Athletics)- P

Ehmke went for a complete game to get player of the game honors in game one, allowing no earned runs with eight hits in a walk in the Athletics’ 3-1 victory to set the tone for the rest of the series.
