Top 5 Players of the 1913 World Series

On Saturday, October 11^th, 1913, the Philadelphia (now Oakland) Athletics defeated the New York (now San Francisco) Giants at Polo Grounds in New York to clinch the 10th World Series four games to one. It was the third World Series championship for the Athletics franchise and the second that was won in New York. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.

5. Christy Mathewson (Giants)- P

Mathewson was the player of the game in game two, going all 10 innings with no earned runs allowed, on eight hits and a walk as the Giants took their lone victory of the series 3-0. Mathewson also started game five, pitching a complete game but giving up two earned runs in the loss.

4. Home Run Baker (Athletics)- 3B

Baker took player of the game in game one, earning three RBIs with three hits as well as a run in the Athletics’ 6-4 win. Overall, Baker got seven RBIs with two runs and nine hits total in the series.

3. Eddie Collins (Athletics)- 2B

Collins claimed the player of the game in game three, getting three RBIs on two runs and three hits in the 8-2 victory. Collins brought in a total of three RBIs, five runs, eight hits and a walk on the series overall.

2. Wally Schang (Athletics)- C

Schang was game four’s player of the game, with four RBIs and a run, a pair of hits and a pair of walks as the Athletics eked out a 6-5 victory. In total, Schang drove in seven RBIs, a pair of runs, five hits and a pair of walks.

1. Eddie Plank (Athletics)- P

Plank was the starter of game five and the eventual player of the game, pitching a complete game allowing no earned runs and just two hits as the Athletics won it 3-1 to claim the series.
