On Thursday, August 1st, 1996, Australia defeated South
Korea 3-1 in the gold medal game to win the fifth gold medal in women’s Olympic
field hockey history. It was the second gold medal for Australia in women’s
field hockey. South Korea took the silver medal, as Netherlands took bronze by
defeating Great Britain in the bronze medal game, with both teams tied 0-0 after
overtime before the Netherlands won the shootout round 4-3. The tournament was
held in the United States with Atlanta as the host city.
Alyson Annan of Australia and Chang Eun-Jung tied for
the most goals in the tournament with eight. Each team played seven games
during the preliminary round of the tournament.
