On Friday, September 30th, 1988, Australia defeated South
Korea 2-0 in the gold medal game to win the third gold medal in women’s Olympic
field hockey history. It was the first gold medal for Australia in women’s
field hockey. South Korea took the silver medal, as the Netherlands took bronze
by defeating Great Britain 3-1 in the bronze medal game. The tournament was
held in South Korea with Seoul as the host city.
Lisanne Lejeune of the Netherlands scored the most
goals in the tournament with eight. Each team played five games during the
tournament, with three coming in the preliminary round and the other two being
played in the medal round.
