Top 5 Players of the 1989 World Series

On Saturday, October 28th, 1989, the Oakland Athletics defeated the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park in San Francisco to win the 86th World Series four games to none. It was the ninth (and as of this writing, most recent) World Series championship for the Athletics franchise and the seventh that was won in California. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.

Just over half an hour before the original start of game three at Candlestick Park on October 17th, the Bay Area was hit by a 6.9 magnitude earthquake, becoming the first earthquake to be captured on live television. 63 people were killed in the earthquake, however, it is believed that the Series game saved many more people with many in the area leaving their work early to watch the game.

5. #21 Mike Moore (Athletics)- P

Moore earned the win in games two and four, as game two saw him pitch seven innings while allowing just one earned run on four hits and two walks in the Athletics’ 5-1 victory, while game four saw him allow two earned runs on five hits and a walk over six innings pitched as the Athletics went on to win 9-6 to earn the series championship.

4. #34 Dave Stewart (Athletics)- P

Stewart got the win in games one and three, pitching a complete game shutout in game one, allowing just five hits and one walk in the Athletics’ 5-0 win, followed up in game three with seven innings pitched and giving up three earned runs on five hits and a walk as the Athletics claimed the 13-7 victory.

3. #2 Tony Phillips (Athletics)- 2B

Phillips got player of the game in game one, as he hit an RBI with one run and two hits as the Athletics took the 5-0 win.

2. #42 Dave Henderson (Athletics)- CF

Henderson was player of the game in game three, as he drove in four RBIs along with a pair of runs and three hits, as the Athletics grabbed the 13-7 victory.

1. #36 Terry Steinbach (Athletics)- C

Steinbach got player of the game honors in games two and four, as game two saw him knock in three RBIs with one run and one hit in the Athletics’ 5-1 win, followed by game four as he earned three RBIs with one run, one hit and one walk as the Athletics claimed the series title with the 9-6 victory.
