Top 5 Players of the 1989 Stanley Cup Finals

On Thursday, May 25th, 1989, the Calgary Flames defeated the Montreal Canadiens at the Montreal Forum in Montreal to win the 76th Stanley Cup Finals four games to two. It was the first (and, as of this writing, only) Stanley Cup championship for the Flames franchise, and the 16th that was won in Quebec. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.

5. #24 Chris Chelios (Canadiens)- D

Chelios earned player of the game in game two, scoring one goal and two assists as the Canadiens won it 4-2.

4. #29 Joel Otto (Flames)- F

Otto got player of the game honors in game five, getting one goal and one assist as the Flames went on to take a 3-2 victory.

3. #39 Doug Gilmour (Flames)- F

Gilmour took player of the game in game six, getting a pair of goals to help the Flames to a 4-2 victory to clinch the series championship.

2. #7 Joe Mullen (Flames)- F

Mullen earned player of the game honors in game four, picking up two goals in the Flames’ 4-2 win.

1. #30 Mike Vernon (Flames)- G

Vernon grabbed player of the game in game one, making 29 saves on 31 chances to help the Flames to the 3-2 victory to start out the series.
