On Thursday, October 13th, 1960, the Pittsburgh
Pirates defeated the New York Yankees at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh to win the
57th World Series four games to three. It was the third World Series
championship for the Pirates franchise and the sixth that was won in Pennsylvania.
These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.
This was also one of only two series to end on a
walk-off home run, and the only one to occur in a game seven.
5. #12 Don Hoak (Pirates)- 3B
Hoak earned player of the game in game five, getting a
pair of RBIs with a run and two hits as the Pirates went on to win 5-2.
4. #9 Bill Mazeroski (Pirates)- 2B
Mazeroski, who hit the walk-off homer in game seven, was
the player of the game in game one, picking up two RBIs and one hit in the
Pirates’ 6-4 win.
3. #5 Hal Smith (Pirates)- C
Smith, who earned game seven’s player of the game, had
three RBIs with a run and a hit as the Pirates won the series championship with
the 10-9 victory.
2. #32 Vern Law (Pirates)- P
Law picked up player of the game honors in game four,
pitching six and a third innings while allowing two earned runs on eight hits
and a walk in the Pirates’ 3-2 victory.
1. #1 Bobby Richardson (Yankees)- 2B
Richardson got player of the game in games three and
six, as game three saw him drive in six RBIs with one run and two hits as the
Yankees won 10-0, followed by a game six performance where he knocked in three
RBIs on one run and two hits in the Yankees’ 12-0 victory.
