Top 5 Players of the 1950 Stanley Cup Finals

On Sunday, April 23rd, 1950, the Detroit Red Wings defeated the New York Rangers at the Detroit Olympia in Detroit to win the 37th Stanley Cup Finals four games to three. It was the fourth Stanley Cup championship for the Red Wings franchise, and the fifth that was won in Michigan. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.

5. #8 George Gee (Red Wings)- F

Gee claimed partial player of the game in games one and three, earning a goal and an assist in game one to go along with a goal in game three.

4. #1 Chuck Rayner (Rangers)- G

Rayner scored player of the game honors in game five, giving up just one goal as the Rangers won it 2-1 in overtime.

3. #14 Pete Babando (Red Wings)- F

Babando picked up player of the game honors in game seven, scoring a pair of goals as the Red Wings won it 4-3 in double overtime to claim the series championship.

2. #10 Edgar Laprade (Rangers)- F

Laprade earned player of the game in game two and partial player of the game in game four, getting two goals in game two as the Rangers won 3-1, followed by another goal added in game four in the Rangers’ 4-3 win in overtime.

1. #12 Sid Abel (Red Wings)- F

Abel got partial player of the game in game three and player of the game in game six, as game three saw him score a goal as the Red Wings won it 4-0, while in game six he added two goals and an assist in the Red Wings’ 5-4 win.
