On Thursday, October 9th,
1919, the Cincinnati Reds defeated the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park in
Chicago to clinch the 16th World Series five games to three. It was the first World
Series championship for the Reds franchise and third that was won in Illinois. These
are the top five players that I felt most stood out during the series.
Note: This World Series
was also impacted by the Black Sox Scandal, in which several White Sox players
are alleged to have thrown the series due to their involvement in gambling.
However, this article will only focus on the series itself.
5. Larry Kopf (Reds)- SS
Kopf took player of the
game in game two, as he had a pair of RBIs and a hit as the Reds won it 4-2 to
go ahead two games to none in the series.
4. Dutch Reuther (Reds)-
P
Reuther earned player of
the game honors in game one’s 9-1 victory for the Reds, as he hit three RBIs
and got one run, three hits and one walk and also got the job done on the
mound, with a complete game with no earned runs on six hits and a walk.
3. Jimmy Ring (Reds)- P
Ring took the game four
player of the game with a complete game shutout, giving up just three hits and
three walks throughout the Reds’ 2-0 victory.
2. Shoeless Joe Jackson
(White Sox)- LF
Jackson grabbed player of
the game in game six and partial player of the game honors in game seven, as he
had one RBI with two hits and one walk in game six as the White Sox went on to
win 5-4 in 10 innings, followed by the White Sox’ 4-1 win in game seven which
saw Jackson get two RBIs with two hits.
1. Edd Roush (Reds)- CF
Roush was the player of
the game in games five and eight for the Reds, taking a pair of RBIs with a
