On September 11th, 1918,
the Boston Red Sox defeated the Chicago Cubs at Fenway Park in Boston to clinch
the 15th World Series four games to two. It was the fifth World Series
championship for the Red Sox franchise and the fifth that was won in
Massachusetts. These are the top five players that I felt most stood out during
the series.
5. Bullet Joe Bush (Red Sox)- P
Bush took the loss in game
two, as the Cubs won it 3-1, however Bush still had a solid game with three
earned runs allowed over eight innings along with seven hits and three walks.
4. Lefty Tyler (Cubs)- P
Tyler was game two’s
player of the game, as he helped lead the Cubs to the 3-1 win with one earned
run on six hits and four walks.
3. Hippo Vaughn (Cubs)- P
Vaughn got player of the
game in game five, as he pitched a complete game shutout with just five hits
allowed and a walk as the Cubs went on to the 3-0 win.
2. Babe Ruth (Red Sox)- P
Ruth took player of the
game in games one and four, pitching a complete game shutout in game one with
six hits and a walk, allowing the Red Sox to take the 1-0 victory. Game four
saw Ruth go eight innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits and two
walks, but still hang on to get the Red Sox a 3-2 win.
1. Carl Mays (Red Sox)- P
Mays earned player of the
game honors in both games three and six, as in game three he allowed one earned
run in a complete game with seven hits and a walk as the Red Sox took a 2-1
victory. In game six, Mays went for another complete game, allowing one earned
run, three hits and a pair of walks in the Red Sox’ 2-1 victory as the team
clinched the series.
