On Sunday, November 18th, 1984, the 1984 NASCAR Cup
Series season concluded with Terry Labonte defeating Harry Gant by 65 points to
win the 36th championship in Cup Series history. It was the first Cup Series
championship for Labonte. These are the top five points finishers for the
season.
The 1984 Daytona 500 was won by Cale Yarborough, who
also led the most laps with 89 as he claimed back-to-back Daytona 500 wins.
5. #11 Darrell Waltrip (-278 points)
Waltrip earned fifth as he had seven wins, 13
top-fives and 20 top-10s for an average finish of 11.2. Waltrip also led the
most laps in seven races.
4. #3 Dale Earnhardt (-243)
Earnhardt scored fourth in points as he claimed two
victories, 12 top-fives and 22 top-10s to take an average finish of 9.6.
3. #9 Bill Elliott (-131)
Elliott claimed third in points with three victories,
13 top-fives and 24 top-10s for an average finish of 8.6.
2. #33 Harry Gant (-65)
Gant scored runner-up as he took three wins, 15
top-fives and 23 top-10s for an average finish of 8.6, leading the most laps in
five races.
1. #44 Terry Labonte
Labonte earned the championship with two wins, 17
top-fives and 24 top-10s, taking an average finish of 8.3 while leading the
most laps in three starts.
