On Friday, August 19th, 2016, Great Britain defeated Netherlands
in the gold medal game with a final score of 3-3, with Great Britain winning in
the shootout 2-0 to win the tenth gold medal in women’s Olympic field hockey
history. It was the first (and, as of this writing, only) gold medal for Great
Britain in women’s field hockey. Netherlands took the silver medal, as Germany
took bronze by defeating New Zealand 2-1 in the bronze medal game. The
tournament was held in Brazil with Rio de Janeiro as the host city.
Alex Danson of Great Britain scored the most goals in
the tournament with five. Each team played five games during the preliminary
round.
