On Sunday, February 22nd, 1998, the Czech Republic defeated
Russia 1-0 in the gold medal game to win the 19th gold medal in Olympic men’s
ice hockey history. It was the first gold medal for the Czech Republic in
Olympic men’s ice hockey. Russia took the silver medal with the loss, claiming
their first silver medal in Olympic men’s ice hockey.
Finland defeated Canada 3-2 in the bronze medal game, claiming their second
bronze medal in Olympic men’s ice hockey.
The tournament was held in Japan, with Nagano as the
host city. Pavel Bure of Russia scored the most goals during the tournament
with nine. Olaf Kolzig of Germany led goaltenders in save percentage at .966.
