On Thursday, August 18th, 2016, Argentina defeated Belgium
4-2 in the gold medal game to win the 23rd gold medal in Olympic men’s field
hockey history. It was the first gold medal for Argentina in Olympic men’s
field hockey. Belgium took the silver medal with the loss, claiming their first
silver medal in Olympic men’s field hockey. Germany
defeated the Netherlands 1-1, after winning the shootout round 4-3, in the
bronze medal game, grabbing their fifth bronze medal in Olympic men’s field
hockey history.
The tournament was held in Brazil, with Rio de Janeiro
as the host city. Gonzalo Peillat of Argentina scored the most goals during the
tournament with 11.
