On Sunday, February 28th, 1988, the Soviet Union
defeated Finland by two point in the final standings to win the 16th gold medal
in Olympic men’s ice hockey history. It was the seventh gold medal for the
Soviet Union in Olympic men’s ice hockey. Finland took the silver medal with seven
points in the standings, claiming their first silver medal in Olympic men’s ice hockey. Sweden defeated Canada by one
point in the standings, grabbing their fourth bronze medal in Olympic men’s ice
hockey.
The tournament was held in Canada, with Calgary as the
host city. Serge Boisvert of Canada scored the most goals during the tournament
with seven. Jarmo Myllys of Finland led goaltenders in save percentage at .928.
