On Sunday, September 10th, 1972, West Germany defeated
Pakistan 1-0 in the gold medal game to win the 12th gold medal in Olympic men’s
field hockey history. It was the first gold medal for West Germany in Olympic
men’s field hockey. Pakistan took the silver medal with the loss, claiming
their third silver medal in Olympic men’s field hockey.
India defeated the Netherlands 2-1 in the bronze medal game, grabbing their second
bronze medal in Olympic men’s field hockey history.
The tournament was held in West Germany, with Munich
as the host city. Ties Kruize of the Netherlands scored the most goals during
the tournament with 17.
