On Thursday, February 22nd, 2018, the United States
defeated Canada 3-2 in a shootout in the gold medal game to win the sixth gold
medal in Olympic women’s ice hockey history. It was the second gold medal for the
United States in Olympic women’s ice hockey, as Canada took their second silver
medal in Olympic women’s ice hockey with the loss. Finland
claimed their third bronze medal in Olympic women’s ice hockey with their 3-2
victory over the Olympic Athletes from Russia in the bronze medal game. The
tournament was held in South Korea, with Pyeongchang as the host city.
The tournament also saw Russian players compete as the
Olympic Athletes from Russia team, as Russia was banned from the Olympics after
several athletes across multiple sports tested positive for steroid use. Players
from both North Korea and South Korea played together to form the Korea team, the
first time the two countries competed together in the Olympics.
Alina Muller of Switzerland scored the most goals
during the tournament with seven, while Shannon Szabados of Canada led
goaltenders in save percentage at .949.
