On Tuesday, February 17th, 1998, the United States
defeated Canada 3-1 in the gold medal game to win the first gold medal in
Olympic women’s ice hockey history. It was the first gold medal for the United
States in Olympic women’s ice hockey, as Canada took their first silver medal
in Olympic women’s ice hockey with the loss. Finland
claimed their first bronze medal in Olympic women’s ice hockey with their 4-1
victory over China in the bronze medal game. The tournament was held in Japan,
with Nagano as the host city.
Danielle Goyette of Canada scored the most goals
during the tournament with eight, while Manon Rheaume of Canada led goaltenders
in save percentage at .938.
