On Saturday, February 28th, 1960, the United States
defeated Canada by two points in the standings to win the ninth gold medal in
Olympic men’s ice hockey history. It was the first gold medal for the United
States in Olympic men’s ice hockey. Canada took the silver medal with eight
points in the standings, claiming their second silver medal in Olympic men’s ice hockey. The Soviet Union defeated Czechoslovakia
by one point in the standings, grabbing their first bronze medal in Olympic
men’s ice hockey. The tournament was held in the United States, with Olympic
Valley as the host city.
Fred Etcher of Canada and Raimo Kilpio of Finland tied
for the most goals scored during the tournament with nine each. Don Head of
Canada led goaltenders in save percentage at .932.
