Best NHL Goaltenders by Uniform Number

1- Jacques Plante (Canadiens, Rangers, Maple Leafs)

Photo Credit: Habs Eyes on the Prize

Starting off with by far the most successful goalie number in NHL history, Plante stands ahead in an incredibly talented group of all-time greats to wear the number 1 jersey. Plante claimed 314 with the Montreal Canadiens, 48 with the New York Rangers and 32 as a Toronto Maple Leaf for 394 career wins with the number, while also winning the Hart trophy for league MVP in 1961-62. Plante also earned the Vezina trophy for best goaltender six times during his run with the Canadiens, including five straight from the 1955-56 season to 1959-60 which remains a record to this day. Plante also won six of the number’s record 64 Stanley Cup titles, tying with future Montreal legend Ken Dryden for most all-time by a goaltender.

2- Lorne Chabot (Rangers)

Chabot became the only NHL goaltender to lead a team in wins while wearing a single-digit number other than 1, doing so in 1926-27 during the New York Rangers’ inaugural season with 22 victories. While Chabot went on to have an outstanding career in the NHL, he would not do it with the number 2 jersey as he permanently switched to #1 starting with 1927-28.

Winkler nabbed 32 career wins with the Boston Bruins in the 1926-27 and 1927-28 seasons, all of which coming while wearing number 11. His 15 shutouts in 1927-28 is also second-most in a single season in league history.

12- George Hainsworth (Canadiens)

One of the most dominant stretches for any goaltender in NHL history came with the number 12 jersey of all things, as Hainsworth captured 76 wins for the Montreal Canadiens in a three-year stretch from 1926-27 to 1928-29. Hainsworth certainly made the most of his time with #12, as he won the Vezina trophy in all three of those seasons, including a 1928-29 season which saw him not only record 22 shutouts but also secure another likely unbreakable record with a goals against average of 0.92, which remains the only time a goalie has achieved a GAA of less than 1.00 in a season of at least 40 games played.

16- Lester Patrick (Rangers)

Although Patrick never led any NHL team in wins during his career (in fact, he only appeared in one regular season game and it wasn’t even as a goaltender), he still made his mark with the number 16 as he won the 1928 Stanley Cup Finals with the New York Rangers, entering the net as an emergency backup at 44 years old. Patrick was credited with the win in game two as well as being the team’s head coach, a role he would hold through the 1938-39 season.

The most recent selection on this list by a wide margin, Koskinen won 83 career games wearing the same #19 that he carried over to the Edmonton Oilers from his time in the Kontinental Hockey League, serving as the team’s winningest goalie in both 2018-19 and 2021-22.

20- Ed Belfour (Sharks, Stars, Maple Leafs, Panthers)

Although he spent the first half of his career wearing number 30, Belfour still got plenty of accomplishments done while wearing #20. Known as “Eddie the Eagle”, Belfour captured 160 wins with the Dallas Stars, 93 with the Toronto Maple Leafs, 27 with the Florida Panthers and three with the San Jose Sharks for 283 wins while wearing the number. Although fellow former Sharks goaltender Evgeni Nabokov also makes a very strong case with an impressive three 40-win seasons, he came up short of the Stanley Cup while Belfour won the Cup with the Stars in 1999.

Best remembered for his time with the Detroit Red Wings, Sawchuk had a successful yet brief run with the Maple Leafs as well while taking the number 24 jersey. The future Hall of Famer won 16 games for the team in 1964-65, platooning with another goaltending great in Johnny Bower as they split that season’s Vezina Trophy.

Another very recent addition to this list, Markstrom has already established his presence in the league with the #25 during his still ongoing NHL career, winning 105 games with the Calgary Flames, 97 for the Vancouver Canucks, 26 for the New Jersey Devils and one as a Panther for 241 total wins with the number.

27- Ron Hextall (Flyers, Nordiques)

One of the best puck-handling goaltenders of all-time, Hextall wasted no time in putting the #27 in highlight reels across the nation, as he won the Vezina Trophy in his rookie season and scored the Conn Smythe award for playoff MVP, though he and the Philadelphia Flyers came up short of lifting the Stanley Cup. Hextall nabbed 240 wins for the Flyers and 29 wins for the Quebec Nordiques (now Colorado Avalanche) for an impressive 269 wins with the number.

Sauve claimed 119 wins for the Buffalo Sabres and 14 wins with the New Jersey Devils while wearing number 28, good for a total of 133 victories. Also noteworthy, Sauve helped earn the first of what would be nine Vezina Trophies for Sabre goaltenders, splitting appearances with teammate Don Edwards in the 1979-80 season.

29- Ken Dryden (Canadiens)

Despite having a relatively short NHL career by today’s standards, Dryden certainly got a lot done in that amount of time, all while wearing the number 29 throughout. Dryden won 258 games while losing only 57 as he played his entire career with the Montreal Canadiens, but this would be far from the last of his accolades as he captured six Stanley Cup rings (including four in a row from 1976 to 1979), which remains a record for goaltenders in an honor he shares with fellow Habs legend Jacques Plante. Not only that, Dryden crossed the 40-win mark in both 1975-76 and 1976-77 to go along with winning the Vezina five times.

30- Martin Brodeur (Devils, Blues)

Photo Credit: All About The Jersey

The winningest goaltender in NHL history, Brodeur secured his place as the best goalie to wear the #30 jersey, despite some incredibly strong competition. Brodeur spent nearly all of his career with the New Jersey Devils, winning 686 games while using the #30 with the team, though he also added three wins at the tail end of his playing career for the St. Louis Blues, earning a whopping 689 wins in total. On top of that, Brodeur backstopped the Devils to three Stanley Cups, the only titles the franchise has won in their history, before going on to win the Vezina Trophy four times to further cement his legacy. Unsurprisingly, Brodeur had no shortage of 40-win seasons under his belt, accomplishing the feat eight times, including setting an NHL record of 48 wins in 2006-07, which was later tied by Braden Holtby in 2015-16.

31- Grant Fuhr (Oilers, Maple Leafs, Sabres, Kings, Blues, Flames)

Fuhr scored a total of 375 wins while wearing the number 31 jersey, getting 198 with #31 for the Edmonton Oilers, 108 for the St. Louis Blues, 38 with the Toronto Maple Leafs, 25 with the Buffalo Sabres, five as a member of the Calgary Flames and one while on the Los Angeles Kings. Fuhr also got the job done in the playoffs, winning four Stanley Cups with the Oilers as he and the team went back-to-back in 1984 and 1985, before doing it again in 1987 and 1988. He also locked up his lone Vezina Trophy in 1987-88, a season which also saw him reach the 40-win mark.

32- Jonathan Quick (Kings, Golden Knights, Rangers)

The appropriately-named Quick wasted no time in establishing himself amongst the best goalies to use the number 32, a number which he has worn in every game of his NHL career. Quick nearly broke the 40-win barrier in his first full season in 2009-10, though he would eventually do so in the 2015-16 season. Quick claimed a franchise-record 370 wins with the Los Angeles Kings, almost 200 more than runner-up Rogie Vachon, while adding 29 wins and five wins while backing up the New York Rangers and Vegas Golden Knights respectively. He currently sits at 404 career wins, as he is still an active player for the Rangers. In 2012 and 2014, he led the Kings to both of their Stanley Cup championships, including being awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP in the former.

33- Patrick Roy (Canadiens, Avalanche)

The only goaltender besides Brodeur and Marc-Andre Fleury to win over 500 games, Roy snagged 289 wins with the Montreal Canadiens and 262 with the Colorado Avalanche for 551 career wins, all of which with the number 33 uniform. Like every goalie on this list so far, Roy won multiple Stanley Cups, in this case winning two for the Canadiens and two more while on the Avalanche as he was named the Conn Smythe winner in three of the four seasons. Speaking of hardware, Roy also won the Vezina Trophy three times, despite only reaching the 40-win mark once during his illustrious career.

Nicknamed “Kipper”, Kiprusoff picked up 314 career wins while using the number 34 jersey, as he captured 305 wins with the Calgary Flames and nine as a San Jose Shark. Kiprusoff also nabbed a Vezina Trophy during the 2005-06 campaign, a season which saw him earn the first of his three career 40-win efforts.

35- Tom Barrasso (Penguins, Senators, Hurricanes)

Barrasso captured 242 victories during his time with the number 35 jersey, the vast majority coming with the Pittsburgh Penguins as he won 226 in the Steel City, while going on to win 13 more with the Carolina Hurricanes and three more for the Ottawa Senators. The American netminder also led the Penguins to their first Stanley Cup title in franchise history in 1991, before taking it back-to-back in 1992. Despite being unable to pull off the three-peat in 1992-93, Barrasso had his only career season of at least 40 wins, plus a run in which the Penguins won a still-standing record 17 consecutive games, with Barrasso in net for 14 of the contests.

36- John Gibson (Ducks)

Although he likely still has several good seasons left in him, Gibson has already built a reputation as one of the league’s better goaltenders of the late 2010’s and early 2020’s, in spite of playing for an Anaheim Ducks team which has been largely lackluster during his time there. Though his career has been shrouded in constant trade rumors in recent years, Gibson has still helped the Ducks to 204 wins so far, all while wearing the unconventional (for a goalie) number 36.

Speaking of goaltenders who are currently in the upper echelon of the league, Hellebuyck, born just two months before Gibson, has made himself known as the best goalie of the current Winnipeg Jets franchise with 309 wins under the number 37 jersey, with many more likely still to go. Not only that, Hellebuyck has also won the Vezina Trophy twice as of this writing, including the most recent 2023-24 season. He also reached the 40-win mark in both 2017-18 and 2024-25.

Deslauriers won 20 games during his time wearing my favorite number for the Edmonton Oilers, though, unfortunately for him, the Oilers were easily the worst team in the NHL in 2009-10, a season which saw Deslauriers lead the league in losses.

Hasek also won the Stanley Cup twice as a Red Wing, first as the primary starter in 2002 and again as a backup in 2008, with the rings being added in with his collection of six Vezina Trophies, including three straight with the Sabres from 1997 to 1999. Biron claimed 134 wins for Buffalo, 65 wins as a member of the Philadelphia Flyers, 22 with the New York Rangers and nine for the New York Islanders to complete the New York State trifecta and get 230 wins as a whole. Perhaps most notably, Holtby tied the single-season wins record with 48 victories in 2015-16, a season which saw him claim the Vezina Trophy thanks to a .922 save percentage and 2.20 goals against average mark. In 2018, however, Holtby would claim the ultimate prize, lifting the Stanley Cup after getting all 16 postseason wins.

Bobrovsky secured the Vezina Trophy in both 2013 and 2017 for the Blue Jackets, as the 2016-17 campaign saw him cross the 40-win barrier for the only time in his career so far, while also posting a dominant .931 SV% and 2.06 GAA. Almost certainly a future Hall of Famer despite just having turned 30 years old, Vasilevskiy has made his mark on the history books with the Tampa Bay Lightning, winning 331 games so far with all occurring using the number 88 jersey. Vasilevskiy claimed the Vezina Trophy in 2019, thanks to a .925 SV% and 2.40 GAA, though his only 40-win season to date came a season prior in 2017-18, when he won 44 games. Most impressively though, he would take full control of the net in the Lightning’s back-to-back Stanley Cup titles in 2020 and 2021, as he would never have to be replaced by a backup in either of the two postseason runs. As a result, Vasilevskiy also earned the Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP in 2021.

Puppa claimed 77 wins with the number, including arguably the top season of his career in 1995-96, where he took a .918 SV% and 2.46 GAA as an unexpected Vezina finalist.
